Measure and measurements of indoor air quality at remodeling and newly-built schools

Abstracts
In order to evaluate the quality of indoor air due to the remodeling and newly-built in S City, 60 schools were
investigated in formaldehyde (HCHO) and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs). One school exceeded the
national standard of formaldehyde 100 g/m3 at 1st measurement. Thirty-eight schools showed higher level of
TVOCs over 400 g/m3 at 1st measurement. Twelve schools showed higher level of TVOCs over 400 g/m3 at
2nd measurement. This result derived from TVOCs which originated from the building materials and finishing
materials. To prevent the pollution of indoor air quality at schools caused by formaldehyde and TVOCs, the
recommendation of environmentally-friendly building materials, the diminishment of emission by bakeout process,
the efficient combination of natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation, and antibacterial effect of chemical
control measures as photo-catalysts should be given positive investigation.
